HOW DOES IT WORK?

Healthy aging is an emerging research field. Once viewed as an inevitable aspect of life, several interventions have been shown to slow the progression of age-related decline.3,4 Considerable evidence has demonstrated that calorie restriction (CR) can increase lifespan, improve stress resistance, and maintain physical function.5,6 Animal studies have consistently shown that mice fed adequate vitamins and nutrients but 40 percent fewer calories, live up to 50 percent longer than mice fed usual diets.7,8 Observational research has long held that humans tend to live longer lives when calories are restricted. During times of famine, physiologic and metabolic changes within the human body bring increased survival.9,10 However, the obvious hardships associated with CR greatly reduces its acceptance, even by well-motivated individuals.
In the quest to replicate the benefits of CR, resveratrol, a polyphenol found in the skin of grapes and in red wine, has shown the most promise for as an anti-aging antioxidant and supports healthy aging.*11-13 It is well-known that a moderate intake of alcohol, and red wine in particular, supports heart health. More recently, researchers began to suspect resveratrol might partially explain the so-called French paradox, the puzzling fact that people in France have exceedingly healthy cardiovascular function despite diets high in fat.
While the exact mechanism of action is uncertain, it is thought that resveratrol works primarily in two ways. First, it activates siRT1, a member of the sirtuin class of enzymes, an enzyme associated with longevity.*15-18 By eliciting an active, highly conserved stress response, siRT1 increases longevity by increasing the ability to survive adversity.21 Secondly, resveratrol supports healthy mitochondrial production.*3,19,20 Mitochondria are cell structures that metabolize glucose and other sugars, a process that naturally generates free radicals and causes increased oxidative stress. Over time, free radicals cause deterioration of the mitochondria themselves, degrading their efficiency and causing heavier production of free radicals
This ongoing, cell-degrading snowball effect is thought to be a major cause of aging.23 Resveratrol's effect on mitochondria may account for much of the compound's impressive effects in scientific studies so far.* As new mitochondria are more efficient than the worn mitochondria they replace, they produce far less free radicals and less oxidative damage.1,11,12
In 2006, researchers at Harvard Medical School and the National Institute on Aging studied the effect of resveratrol on three groups of middle-aged (one-year-old) mice.22 One mouse group was fed a diet with 60 percent of calories coming from fat. The second group was given the same high calorie diet, but was also fed resveratrol. The third group acted as a control and received a standard healthy diet.
The results found that the mice who received supplemental resveratrol lived over 30% longer than the mice who also ate the poor diet but did not receive resveratrol.* Additionally, the group receiving supplemental resveratrol experienced additional support for liver health and had more mitochondria (essential for cellular energy) than the group who did not receive resveratrol supplementation.*22
Japanese Sophora (Sophora japonica) Flower Bud
Resveratrol Ultra contains rutin, a potent bioflavonoid from Japanese Sophora (Sophora japonica) Flower Bud. This clinically-studied plant compound possesses free radical scavenging activity and supports healthy collagen.*23,24 A comparative study of flavonoids found that rutin effectively reduces pain and stiffness due to occasional overuse.*25 Rutin is converted to quercentin in the body.
