Senior Women’s Pack, provided by Douglas Laboratories®, supplies essential vitamins, minerals and other nutrients needed to assist the body in maintaining healthy bone structure in a convenient pack. Senior Women’s Pack includes significant amounts of calcium, vitamin D3, vitamin K as well as BONISTEIN, a pure form of genistein not derived from soy.
FUNCTIONS
It is well known that the risk of fracture increases with age and that the number of people over 50 years of age is a rapidly growing segment of the population. By the year 2020, half of all Americans will already have or will develop problems with their bone structure. Postmenopausal women are particularly at risk since the loss of estrogen production at menopause leaves bones much less protected. This product has been specially designed for individuals who wish to increase their intake of calcium and other nutritional factors for maintaining the optimal structure and function of their bones.
Ultra Preventive® X: Ultra Preventive® X now contains Metafolin®, a patented, natural form of (6S) 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) as well as 500 IU of vitamin D3 per serving. 5-MTHF is the naturally occurring, predominant form of folate commonly found in cells and is essential for overall health, as it participates as a cofactor in a reaction that involves the remethylation of homocysteine to methionine. Unlike synthetic folic acid, 5-MTHF can be used directly by the body, without the need for an additional conversion via the enzyme (5,10- methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR)). In certain populations, the body’s ability to convert folic acid to 5-MTHF by use of this enzyme may be compromised due to genetic differences.
Metafolin® contains only the S isomer of 5-MTHF and has been shown to be the only form of folate to be able to cross the blood-brain barrier. Additional vitamin D3 (also known as cholecalciferol) has been added to this formula as numerous scientists now feel that supplementation with vitamin D at levels greater than previously thought necessary is critical to helping maintain overall health.
Cal-6+Mg: Cal-6 + Mg. is a special chelate complex of 6 sources of calcium with magnesium and other ingredients to assist the body in primary mineral for building the strong structure of bones and teeth. Bone is constantly turning over, a continuous process of formation and resorption. In children and adolescents, the rate of formation of bone mineral predominates over the rate of resorption. In later life, resorption predominates over formation. Therefore, in normal aging, there is a gradual loss of bone.
BONISTEIN-Max: BONISTEIN-Max is an exclusive patent-pending blend of pure genistein, vitamin D3, vitamin K and omega-3 fatty acids from ultra pure fish oil to help maintain bone health. BONISTEIN-Max is also unique in that it contains BONISTEIN, a pure form of genistein, and not a soy isoflavone extract. The maintenance of healthy bone structure results from a balance of bone resorption (by osteoclasts) coupled with bone formation (from osteoblasts). Specifically, genistein has been shown to modulate the activity of osteoblasts by down regulating interleukin-6 (IL-6) production. Genistein has also been shown to decrease production of TNF-alpha. The production of IL-6 and TNFalpha can act to increase osteoclast activity, so limiting their production is desirable in order to support bone health.
Vitamin K has been shown to decrease calcium excretion and is involved in gammacarboxylation of osteocalcin. Osteocalcin is important for healthy bone formation, as it facilitates the binding of calcium to hydroyapatite. However, vitamin K has also been shown to affect the synthesis of IL-6, a cytokine that can negatively impact bone health. Omega-3 fatty acids have also been studied for their role in bone health. Diets with a low ratio of omega-6:omega-3 fatty acids help to minimize the bone loss typically seen after menopause. In fact omega-3 fatty acids may support healthy bone formation. Vitamin D is well known for the role it plays in helping to regulate calcium and bone metabolism. As we age, vitamin D status declines. If given the same amount of light, a younger person can produce more vitamin D compared with an older individual. When advancing age is combined with northern latitudes one can quickly become deficient in vitamin D. Vitamin D can increase the expression of osteocalcin and other important compounds from osteoblasts to help support bone formation or it can help to breakdown bone and mobilize calcium when it is needed elsewhere in the body. Numerous scientists now feel that supplementation with vitamin D at levels greater than previously thought necessary is critical to helping maintain healthy bone remodeling as we age.
