Protein is required for healthy growth and development, immune function, and energy. Maintenance, repair, and growth of body tissue are accomplished by amino acids derived from protein. Amino acids are important for lean muscle tissue, endurance, and hormone production. Because humans lack the ability to synthesize certain amino acids, these are referred to as essential amino acids and include isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine.
